It was all about senior all-league linebacker Nathan Goldie and his first-team Acorn defense early on at the Live Oak High football program’s annual Green and Gold intra-squad scrimmage at Live Oak’s Richert Stadium field on Saturday.

Then, late in the scrimmage, the Acorn offense put together a drive that was capped off by a nifty touchdown run by senior all-league running back Dustin Muhn.

“Early, it was the defense kind of stiffing them, and then the offense got its dander up and got one in,” first-year head coach Rick Booth said.

It was the Live Oak squad’s hopes for the upcoming season in a nutshell, featuring the Acorns’ two best returning starters trading jabs. Only, the team is hoping to be pounding on other teams instead of their own teammates, and soon.

The Acorns will get their chance this Friday when they travel to Santa Cruz High to take on the Cardinals in a scrimmage at 7pm.

As for Saturday’s intra-squad action, Booth said it was a good learning experience for his players, especially the younger and less experienced ones.

And, there are plenty of those this season for a team that returns just a handful of starters from last season’s section playoff squad.

“The kids on the whole experienced, some for the first time, this level of play,” the longtime assistant coach said. “I think they came to understand what level they have to play at.”

Seniors Steven Webb and Ryan Bennett split time at quarterback as they vie for the starting spot.

Muhn, who led the team in rushing last season, said it felt good to get into the end zone, even in a scrimmage. But he added that the entire team is ready for Friday.

“It always feels good to break the end zone,” he said. “This was a quicker pace (than in practice) and that was good. But everyone’s ready for (Santa Cruz). Everyone’s really excited.”
