No. 1 Peppers take Davis Shootout title
The nation’s top-ranked girls U11 soccer team, the Central Valley Chilipeppers, continued their recent dominance by taking home the first-place trophy from the Davis Shootout last weekend.
The Peppers, with Morgan Hill standouts Samantha Riolo and Colby Carson, opened bracket play against the Mountain View Los Altos Revolution, scoring quickly and often. Eight different Peppers would score in the 9-0 win.
In their second game, the Pepper took on the highly regarded Sacramento United Red Extreme, but the Peppers had little trouble dispatching them in a 4-0 win. The Peppers would then breeze through the Suisun Eagle Spirit 9-0 to make the final.
In the final, the Peppers would match up against the home team – the Davis Legacy. The Peppers started off strong, gaining a 3-0 advantage before Davis scored just before the half for a 3- 1 Peppers lead. The second half turned out more of the same as the Peppers cruised to a 6- 2 victory. Goalkeeper Leslie Nelson was outstanding all weekend, as were her defenders Gaby Squarcia, Lauren Saenz, Hannah Vane, Natalie Royle and Jessica Jochheim. The Peppers midfield of Samantha Riolo, Zarette Munoz, Celeste Kaashoek, Chloe Varvell and Brittany Squarcia controlled the play all weekend long. Colby Carson, Chloe Ainley and Breanna Ross pressured their opponents’ defenses on offense. In fact, the Peppers outscored the opposition 28-2.
The Peppers will now prepare for the SoCal Blues Cup in San Juan Capistrano on Labor Day weekend, where the competition will include the nation’s top teams.
