Today’s high temperatures, pushing triple digits throughout southern Santa Clara Valley, were only the start of a three-day warm spell to hit the area, according to Forecaster Duane Dykema of the National Weather Service.
“This warm spell, it got under way today and will continue through Thursday. The hottest temperatures are expected to be tomorrow (Wednesday),” Dykema said. “It should definitely exceed 100 tomorrow for Morgan Hill and Gilroy.”
While the temperature climaxed in the upper 90s today in Morgan Hill, Wednesday could be one for the record books. Today’s record high was 101 degrees set in 1995; Wednesday’s record high (July 28) sits at 102 from 1980; and Thursday’s record high (July 29) sizzled at 106 in 1977.
“We typically get at least a couple of these heat events during the summer, sometimes more. Nothing all that unusual about this,” Dykema said. “We’re seeing the hottest temperatures inland. It’s still warm at coast but not overly hot. It’s about 80 at the coast.”
A gradual cool down will begin Friday, with temperatures to remain in the lower 90s, and by Sunday temperatures will drop to the high 80s, according to the NWS forecast.
