After battling to a standstill in the first half, the Live Oak
and Hollister-San Benito High girls soccer teams had a choice. They
could continue a tough defensive struggle or they could open things
up a bit in the second half. It turned out that a crucial penalty
call in the Haybaler box gave the Acorns their first goal of the
match, and left Baler coach Mike Schurig with little choice but to
open up his offensive attack. However, it was LO that took
advantage of the opening, scoring two more goals en route to a 3-0
victory over visiting Hollister-SB on Saturday.
After battling to a standstill in the first half, the Live Oak and Hollister-San Benito High girls soccer teams had a choice.

They could continue a tough defensive struggle or they could open things up a bit in the second half.

It turned out that a crucial penalty call in the Haybaler box gave the Acorns their first goal of the match, and left Baler coach Mike Schurig with little choice but to open up his offensive attack.

However, it was LO that took advantage of the opening, scoring two more goals en route to a 3-0 victory over visiting Hollister-SB on Saturday.

LO coach Tony Vasquez said his team controlled most of the match, despite the Balers’ tough defensive effort.

“We dominated,” Vasquez said. “They packed it in and tried to keep us from scoring. But we got through.”

LO (4-6-3 overall, 3-0-1 in league) received goals from Lena Marsh (on a penalty kick after a Baler hand ball), Michelle McDonald (on an assist from Jamie Hickey), and Jenny Carroll (with an assist from Jenny Emick).

LO hosts North Salinas today at 5pm.

Hollister-SB had its best scoring chance with the match still scoreless in the first half. Jennifer Vandenberg broke free for a one-on-one shot on LO goalie Andrea Riolo, but Riolo made the save.

Baler coach Mike Schurig said his team’s defense, led by Michelle Sanchez and goalkeeper Mary von Urff, played outstanding.

“Michelle marked up McDonald and kept her from scoring except for the one goal (on a teammate’s mistake),” Schurig said. “And, Mary had several good saves. We’re still in the running.”

The Balers fell to 3-8-2 overall, 2-2-1 in league).
