Morgan Hill – Last season’s junior varsity players will make up the core of the Sobrato Bulldogs inaugural varsity girls basketball team. With a mix of veteran players and newcomers the Bulldogs are looking to start their first varsity season off right.

Sophomores Gabrielle Aguire, Anita Baio, Roxanne Dominguez and junior Jessica Naranjo will bring a lot of experience to a young team.

“They are the core of our team,” said Sobrato’s head coach Rodney Tabares. “They have been playing together since the eighth grade and they will supply much needed leadership.”

As a 6-foot-1 center Aguire recorded a double-double in every jv game last season and Baio, a power forward, scored a school high 24 points in a game. Dominguez will run the floor at the point guard position and Naranjo is another power forward that will drive to the hoop.

The Bulldogs also welcome several newcomers who will give the team more talent and depth.

Sophomore shooting guard Cherish Martinez is a transfer from Leland High in San Jose and brings Sobrato a solid shooter on offense. Freshman shooting guard Desiree Saenz and freshman small forward Michelle Bradley provide the offense with two more skilled shooters and ball handlers.

“They’re going to bring us a lot of attitude,” explained Tabares. “They’re all good ball handlers, good shooters and good students. They give us the ability to shoot the ball by creating their own offensive opportunities.”

The Lady Bulldogs have been practicing and playing together since early July in an intense summer program and can’t wait to kick off their first season together.

“The girls are looking forward to starting the season,” said Tabares. “I’m looking for it to be a fun, exciting experience. My outlook is positive. I know we’ll win some games this year. It’s a building process.”

Helping Tabares along in this process are assistant coaches Phil Williams and Wesley Little. Both Williams and Little have been AAU coaches and bring a lot of experience, which allows Tabares to run more looks with the team.

The Bulldogs get their season underway on Monday as they face off against Yerba Buena at 7pm.
