Can you believe it? It has been 20 years since El Toro Elementary School opened its doors to students. In the interest of accurate reporting, those open doors were attached to portables located at the north end of the current parking lot (the school itself was not ready for learning for another few years).
El Toro began as a kindergarten through third grade school with a few of our current teachers, Mrs. Betty, Mrs. Lee and Mr. Peterson belonging to the original staff.
The vision for our school began with Doris Cross, the first principal. She pictured a layout that would allow teachers and students to see on another from class to class and grade to grade, creating a community of learning through the years.
She also insisted on windows on the outside walls of the classrooms, which were not part of the original plans for children to enjoy the scenery and take advantage of the fresh air. Our mascot, the El Toro Bull, was chosen with the classic tale, The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf, in mind.
The realization of the school and grounds were a community effort. Time and resources were given freely. We have so many families and individuals to thank you for helping with everything from laying sod to painting the lines in the parking lot.
Through the years and many families and educators have come and gone, but as we now celebrate two decades of our beloved school, we are the fortunate recipients of the talents and traditions imparted to use by the many who paved the way for our school we enjoy today.
