SWIMMING: Bulldogs heading into ST Finals after first dual-meet loss

MORGAN HILL — Undefeated in three dual meets, Sobrato is positioned to win a second straight league championship in boys swimming. The Bulldogs’ stretch run, however, appears more difficult than in 2009.

Their 120-56 win over Oak Grove on Tuesday marked one of the final Santa Teresa Division duals at Sobrato High School this spring. The Bulldogs will host the last one April 22 before wrapping up at Del Mar and Piedmont Hills.

“We’re definitely keeping our focus on where it should be: finishing strong and being where we need to be to win league,” coach Dave Letts said Wednesday. “We have to go on the road now and just try to do the best we can.”

Sobrato will try to meet a few Central Coast Section standards along the way. Unlike the SHS girls team, no Bulldogs have qualified yet for the May 21 CCS Championship meet, though some have come close.

Senior Paul Watts flirted with one again Tuesday while winning the 50-yard freestyle in 24.06 seconds — less than two seconds off the CCS mark. The team’s 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays of Prashan Welipitiya, Danny Thompson, Patrick Read and Watts nearly qualified as well, coming within five seconds in both events.

“I’m confident we’ll get those three in,” Letts said. “It’s within their grasp.”

Christiana Bridges has made the 500-yard freestyle cut (5:34.19) for the Lady Bulldogs, who moved to 2-1 with a 118-53 win over Oak Grove. The freshman won the event in 5:38.84 Tuesday.

Letts is pushing her to meet the 200-yard freestyle standard (2:03.49) as well.

“She should definitely be able to make it in both,” he said.
