Softball teams win in routs Wednesday
SAN JOSE — Sobrato began a three-game week of Mount Hamilton Division in drag-out fashion, losing in 10 innings to Leigh, 8-7, Monday and Westmont, 10-9, Wednesday.
The Bulldogs (11-13 overall, 10-8 league), tired but still in good shape to make the playoffs, put together late rallies in both games. They pushed across two runs in the final inning Monday after the eighth-place Longhorns (4-18-1, 4-13-1) broke a 5-5 tie in the top half. Against the Warriors (13-10-1, 9-8-1), Sobrato scored five runs in the sixth inning to tie the game 5-all.
The Bulldogs will try to qualify for the playoffs again today at Santa Teresa, starting at 3:30 p.m.
Pioneer 8, Live Oak 2
The Mustangs kept their playoff hopes alive and put Live Oak’s postseason plans on hold for at least another game.
The Acorns (13-11, 8-10) can make amends starting at 3:30 p.m. today at Westmont.
Pioneer (10-13, 9-10), meanwhile, is desperately trying to break even overall and in league with three Mount Hamilton Division games left.
The Mustangs played with conscious effort Wednesday in San Jose, unloading a dozen hits against three Live Oak pitchers. Kevin Rojko provided three plus two RBIs, and Curtis Tanquary singled, doubled and drove in three runs. Teammate Gabe Souryasack batted 2 for 3.
Nick Pusateri provided three singles and scored once for the Acorns, and Ryan Muir added a double and RBI.
SOFTBALL
The hits finally came in bunches for the Lady Acorns — and just in time to get them eligible for the postseason.
After scattering five hits across back-to-back 4-1 losses to Pioneer and Piedmont Hills, Live Oak (8-6-1, 7-3) unleashed 14 hits Wednesday to beat Evergreen Valley 15-5 in five innings at San Jose.
Katie Obbema picked up the win and contributed four hits and a pair of RBIs for the third-place Acorns, who clinched at least a .500 finish in the Mount Hamilton.
Live Oak will play its first of two final home games at 3:30 p.m. today against Leland.
Sobrato 10, Del Mar 4
With Kaley Lefore and Kallie Klinger back in the lineup, the Lady Bulldogs won in a stat-lover’s paradise Wednesday.
Four Sobrato players — Nicole Larson, Frankie Kellett, Taylor Di Sibio, Emilie Nunez — came through with multiple hits. Larson doubled twice, stole two bases and drove in three runs, Kellett batted 2 for 4, including a three-run homer, Di Sibio went 2 for 5 with one run and an RBI and Nunez scored and finished 2 for 3.
Kellett pitched four innings to get the win, and Katie Machado allowed three hits in as many innings for the Bulldogs (6-5 Santa Teresa).
