Poria now ranked 12th in NCGA Boys First Flight
PEBBLE BEACH — Morgan Hill native Amay Poria shot 166 in two rounds at Poppy Hills Golf Course last weekend to place third in the Boys First Flight of the Junior Tour Series V tournament.

The bronze-medal finish moved Poria to 12th in the Northern California Golf Association boys point standings. The Martin Murphy Middle School eighth-grader is also tied for first in points and wins at the Santa Teresa Junior Golf Club.

Poria, 14, has been playing golf for about two years.

“He’s picked up the game quickly,” said Poria’s coach, Don Leone, the PGA director of instruction at Coyote Creek Golf Club. “He still has a lot of learning to do, but, as far as swing mechanics and hitting the ball, he’s come along way, and he’s getting better and better. Amay has a lot of confidence in himself.”

Poria protected his position in the final round after opening with a 10-over-par 82 Saturday. Pebble Beach greeted him with fog and low-40s temperature Sunday, but Poria battled through it to close at 84. He shot par on five of the first nine holes and four of the final six, including a strong finish on the par-5 18th.

Also in the Boys First Flight, Morgan Hill’s Austin Murphy carded an 89 Saturday and a 90 Sunday to tie for 10th at 179.
