“Red Phone, does anyone know who was at the Starbucks at Edmundson Avenue and Monterey Road between 11:30 a.m. and noon Wednesday (July 14)? They had a huge entourage of security people and police escort. I had a hard time finding a parking place to get a sandwich at Togo’s because they were parked all over the place and standing around everywhere. It must have been someone important. Has anyone heard?”
Red Phone: Dear Just Curious, Red Phone contacted Police Chief Bruce Cumming, who said in fact, it was someone important.
“We were contacted by the Secret Service about a dignitary who was the King of Jordan,” Cumming said. “We believe he was just passing through town and stopped for a coffee and visit to the local Harley store.”
So, Red Phone contacted Jean Mitchell, special agent in charge for the San Francisco office of the United States Secret Service, who confirmed that King Abdullah II was here. He and a few friends took a week-long vacation riding their Harley Davidson motorcycles throughout Northern California, she said.
King Abdullah II arrived July 9 and the entourage first visited San Francisco and Half Moon Bay. Then they rode to Mammoth Lake, then Lake Tahoe and Sacramento, before cruising through Morgan Hill on their way to Carmel where the King spoke Thursday.
“He stopped periodically at various coffee shops,” Mitchell said.
A Starbucks employee said there were about 20 people with King Abdullah II and his entire entourage sat inside to drink their coffee. Unfortunately, so many people ordered, he was unable to recall the King’s order.
A call to the House of Thunder Harley Davidson shop – where the King also visited – was not immediately returned.
King Abdullah II assumed his constitutional powers as Monarch of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Feb. 7, 1999, the day his father, the late King Hussein, died.
There you have it, good caller. Hope that answers your question.
Celebrate academics like athletics
“Dear Red Phone, I would like to see the 2010 8th grade graduate names from Britton Middle School in the Morgan Hill Times, as has been tradition for many years. It is this recognition that makes a small town and newspaper charming. There are many who worked very hard and earned 4.0 and special recognition. It is a boost to help motivate them before they enter high school. On a similar note, regarding high school, a list printed with the local high school grads and the school they intend on attending would be a nice way to send them off to college. Academics are vitally important and need to be celebrated equitably with those who possess athletic talent. Thanks Red Phone!”
Red Phone: Dear Motivate Them, Red Phone agrees that educational achievement should be celebrated as much as athletics, and the Times has a reporter dedicated to covering education in the city.
As to your question, Red Phone checked the past three special graduation sections, but could not find any list of middle school students.
Perhaps next year, both Britton and Martin Murphy can send the Times a list. Red Phone is sure the editor can find a place for them in print or online.
Finally, check this year’s graduation section that ran in the June 9 edition. On page 2 is a map of the United States listing some of the colleges local high school grads are attending. There’s just no room to list the college each student will attend.
Anyway, hope that helps and answers your questions, good caller.
