Tons of fun and activities planned for the Fourth of July

Dear Editor,

As Chairperson of the 21st Annual Patriotic Sing, I would like to invite members of our community, families and friends to this year’s program at 6 p.m. Saturday, at the Britton Middle School gymnasium. The event, which is free, will feature patriotic songs, essay contest awards, a pictorial tour through this great land of ours, and a chance to celebrate America’s birthday. We extend a special invitation to those who have served or continue to serve in our Armed Forces. Please join us and rekindle your patriotism!

The Patriotic Sing is the first of several events brought by the volunteers of Independence Day, Inc.

Begin the day by participating in our first Family Bike Ride. Individuals and families are invited to ride. Following the sing on Friday evening, you are invited to dance in the streets of downtown Morgan Hill to the music of the “Usual Suspects.” The street dance begins at 7 p.m., immediately following the sing.

On Sunday, the 1-mile children’s event at starts at 8 a.m. The 5k event starts at 8:30 a.m. Registration begins at 7 a.m. at P.A. Walsh Elementary School. Watch your children run, or better yet run with them, peel off at the end, then line up for the 5k and have them cheer you on. Once the streets clear of walkers and runners, get set to watch classic cars cruise the parade route. Then, at 11 a.m., enjoy Morgan Hill’s Fourth of July Parade.

Following the parade, take a look at those classic cars downtown, enjoy some family time, and grab a blanket and get ready to watch as fireworks light up the sky over Community Park. The firework festival begins at 6 p.m. with people staking out their viewing areas. Music will be provided by the “The Dadz.” After dark, a dramatic firework show will conclude the festivities of the Fourth.

So many communities are canceling firework displays this year due to budget constraints. Because of community fundraising support, IDI is proud to be able to continue our tradition. Thanks to those of you who have contributed. There will be donation boxes at each of our events. We are committed to present a memory-making Fourth of July for our residents, and with your help we will do so. Check out www.mhidi.com for more details. Or, you can find us on Facebook. Thank you IDI, and, Happy Birthday, America!

California residents who boycott Arizona need to learn the law

Dear Editor,

I read the Times letter’s to the editor and hear on the news so much about people boycotting Arizona for their immigration law and I think it’s really sad that so many people jump on the bandwagon and criticize, and yet know nothing of our own laws in this state.

Arizona is enforcing the very same law we have here in California. The only difference is that we don’t enforce it. So, my question to all you people out there who want to boycott Arizona, will you now look up the law to see that in fact we have the same law on our books, and move to another state? After all, you’re boycotting Arizona, so will you now boycott the very state you live in for having the law? Paleeese! Read a book!
