“Dear Red Phone, we have lived in Morgan Hill for nearly 30 years, and my family and I have rarely missed the parade. In past years, when the Fourth fell on a Sunday, the parade was started at noon – I assume out of respect for churchgoers. This was the first year I had to miss the parade because it started one hour earlier and did not allow time for me to attend both my worship service and the parade. Why and who made the decision to start the parade earlier this year? What has been the history of the parade when it fell on a Sunday? Thanks Red Phone.”
Red Phone: Dear Red, White and Blue, Red Phone contacted Bob Hunt, chair of the Independence Day, Inc. parade. He said your memory may be a bit faulty. IDI has traced and documented the parade back to 1894 and in that time, the Fourth has fallen on a Sunday every seven years, more or less when you factor in leap year. Except for two occasions, 2004 and this year, the parade was held July 3 or July 5 when the Fourth fell on a Sunday. In 2004, the parade started at 11:30 a.m. to allow time for parishioners at affected churches to get home and return for the festivities. They also held services earlier those years. This year, at the suggestion of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church officials, the parade was held 30 minutes earlier to lessen the heat factor, Hunt said. The parade starts at 10 a.m. at all other times. Oh, by the way, the next time July 4 falls on a Sunday: the year 2021.
Hope that answers your questions, good caller.
Cory Lane lights have been replaced
“I called the city a few days ago advising them that the only two street lights we have on Cory Lane are burned out. There are a lot of vehicles that stay in the driveways at night which makes it very unsafe. I take my dogs out at night though and even in my yard it is still frightening. Can you help get these lights back on? Thanks.”
Red Phone: Dear Frightened, Red Phone contacted Karl Bjarke, deputy director of public works, who said Friday the light issue has been addressed.
“The burned out lights on Cory Lane have been replaced and those lights are now working,” Bjarke said. There you have it, good caller. Walk in the light.
