Dear Editor,
The Ann Sobrato High School Cheerleading (Spirit) team would like to thank all of the businesses including Morgan Hill Glass, Napa Auto Parts, the Gilroy Garlic Festival, the Morgan Hill Times, and the citizens of Morgan Hill who helped the team raise enough money through fundraising and private donations to attend the ProBowl in Hawaii on Feb. 13. Without your support it wouldn’t have been possible. Big cheers to you all, from all of us:
Richard Knapp (principal), Ashley Miller (coach), Derek Powers, Mark Souza, Pam Bailey, Trea Erdmann, Emily Gutirrez, Jilliane Jackson, Kathleen Lawson, Brittney Montez, Valerie Nash, Catherine McChesney, Jasmine Rodriquez, Katherine Rosenbaum, Stephen Solorio, Mojgan Toofan, Shannon West, Melanie Woodson, Kara Yardley, and much Mahalo to our chaperones: Dustin Davis, Nellie Davis/Rodriguez, Ashley Miller, Alisha Powers, Tara Yardley and Linda Woodson.
Thanks to all of you, this truly is an experience the 2004-2005 team will never soon forget. We performed our hearts out on that special day in February in front of millions. The rehearsals were long, everyday, and sometimes brutal, but all would say it was well worth it. Come, think about it … Hawaii, ProBowl, 15 minutes of fame. Yeah, it was the best time ever. Mahalo (thank you in Hawaiian) Morgan Hill.
We would like to give a very special thanks to John Sobrato, who gave a tremendous amount of support to help achieve our money goal. A special thanks also to Lisa Molina of Gilroy for her very generous donations that helped two members of the team with $300 each on behalf of her son Michael Molina and in memory of Erin Kinke. We would also like to give a big Mahalo to Jim, the owner of Scrambl’z, for giving us the opportunity to raise money by performing in front of his restaurant. Also, thanks to the sales team at Dan Gamel’s for their donations (Mahalo Paige). These are just a few. The whole town of Morgan Hill has been very generous.
For most of us we had never been snorkeling, to a luau, or flown in a plane for five hours. Some of our activities included walking to Planet Hollywood, which they closed to the public so that all the cheer squads, approximately 750 kids from across the country, could have lunch together. For blocks and blocks all you saw were kids walking down the main drag of Honolulu, it truly was a sight.
Some of us had the experience of swimming with a sea turtle. Derek Powers had the spotlight when he won the male hula contest at the luau in from of hundreds of people – there’s not a shy bone in his body. We got to meet some of the football players and get autographs. The last night the USA (United Spirit Association) held a private outside dinner and a dance party in the park to honor all the spirit teams that participated in the ProBowl, which too was an awesome experience.
Five hundred words or less can’t possibly describe the life-long memories the team will have. Mahalo again to Morgan Hill. Watch for us again next year. Mahalo from Ann Sobrato High School Cheer Squad 2004-2005.
Alisha Powers, Morgan Hill
