“Dear Red Phone, what is the status of the proposed Catholic high school at Tennant and Murphy?”

“Red Phone, I was wondering how the committee is coming along with the fundraising for the new Catholic high school. There hasn’t been anything in the paper lately.”

Red Phone: Dear Where Does It Stand, according to George Chiala, chair of the 10-member Committee for a Catholic High School, “substantial dollars have been raised,” but he declined to name a specific amount. Chiala said the committee was still in the “soft” fundraising phase, meaning it was not making a big public push yet for funds that will ultimately help finance the high school’s construction. The committee hopes to raise about $20 million out of the $30 million that the first phase of construction is expected to cost, Chiala said.

As for the school itself, the city is still working on the environmental impact report, which Chiala said he hoped would be finished within the year. The report is a necessary step in getting the agricultural land the committee purchased re-zoned.

Good callers, hope that answers your questions, and check the Times next week for a story.

Intersection is under investigation

“Dear Red Phone, every morning I go to get onto northbound U.S. 101 from Tennant and the light is ridiculously long. Perhaps this is some type of metering system, however it poses a threat to safety when people are going in other lanes to run the red light. I have been in two perilous situations because I refuse to run a red light regardless of how long it is or the fact that there is no traffic at 5:30 a.m. What is the city doing about this? Please help.”

“Red Phone, is it possible to have someone look into the light on Tennant Avenue by the Ramada Inn. Every morning that light holds up traffic trying to turn on to the freeway from Tennant. The line to turn becomes severely backed up. People are now trying to avoid the light by going straight and then making an illegal U-turn past the light and turning right instead of left onto the freeway.”

Dear Tired of Waiting, a few weeks ago Red Phone contacted Bernard Walik, public information officer for Caltrans in Santa Clara County. He said his staff supervisor would look into the matter. Well, last week he responded saying that the staff supervisor opened an order for the engineering team to investigate this issue.

“I will let you know as soon as we have completed our review of the situation,” Walik told Red Phone.

So good callers, stay tuned as the wheels of bureaucracy turn ever so slowly.
