CLUB RUGBY: South Valley wins DIII state title; regionals next

Pitzer, Marcum score tries to help Acorns overcome 5-0 halftime
deficit
SANTA ROSA — Live Oak scored a dozen consecutive points in the second half last weekend to beat the host Santa Rosa U19 Rugby club 12-5 in nonleague play.

Though they dominated field position and ball control for most of the first half, the Acorns went into the break trailing 5-0.

They turned up their play in the second half, scoring two tries and one conversion. Live Oak’s forward pack dominated in scrums and lineouts and spoiled the few possessions Santa Rosa earned.

Junior fullback Andrew Pitzer and sophomore scrum half Mitch Marcum scored the Acorns’ tries with Joe Guidry, a senior standoff, converting Marcum’s try to complete the rally. Seniors Alex Roman and Mark Weber played well at prop and center, respectively, for Live Oak, which also won a thrilling frosh/soph match against Santa Rosa, 24-22.

Saturday, the Acorns will play in the Kick Off Tournament in Sacramento.
