“Dear Red Phone, with the election over, the town is littered with candidate signs. Who is responsible for their clean up? Is there any fine for signage left up?”
Red Phone: Dear Who is Responsible, Red Phone took a quick trip around town and it seems most of the signs have been removed. As of Friday afternoon, a Don Gage for Water District sign still stood at W. Edmundson Avenue and Sunnyside Drive.
Regardless, Red Phone contacted City Attorney Danny Wan, who said candidates have seven days to remove campaign signs. If they are not removed, the municipal code calls them a nuisance and allows the city to remove them and charge the candidate.
It should be noted, however, that just as during the campaign when the city declined to remove illegally placed signs due to a lack of resources, i.e, people, it’s more likely someone will call the candidate. Your phone’s about to ring, Don.
There you have it, good caller.
Old oak tree was ‘heavily rotted’
“Tilton Avenue has been closed for construction of new homes and street repair. How come they were allowed to rip out a 100-plus-year-old oak tree that wasn’t dead? And, what is taking so long for the road to be open?”
Red Phone: Dear Under The Old Oak Tree, Red Phone apologizes for not getting to your question sooner. According to Scott Creer, a senior civil engineer with the city, Tilton Avenue was closed between Dougherty Avenue and Monterey Road as this section of roadway was completely rebuilt by the developer of the Capriano development. The roadway work was completed in September and Tilton Avenue has been open since.
Regarding the large oak tree that was removed, the plans called for the tree to stay.
“However, upon evaluation by a certified arborist, the interior of the main tree trunk was found to be heavily rotted and it was recommended that the tree be removed for safety reasons,” Creer said.
There you have it, good caller.
