The Lincoln, Mont.-based Swingley, who has won the race four times, was hindered by an eye injury that he suffered in last year’s race.
Despite permanently damaging his sight after freezing his corneas during the Iditarod last year, Swingley returned determined to finish.
And finish he did.
After a sluggish start that saw him sitting in 31st early in the race, Swingley rallied to as high as ninth overall by the race’s midway point.
