Sabean, Giants walking a thin line

SHS going for series win Friday at Leigh
MORGAN HILL — Chris Bradley picked up his first victory of the season, and Ryan Williams his first save Wednesday as the Bulldogs took the first of three important Mount Hamilton Division meetings with Leigh 4-1 at Sobrato High School.

A seven-day break from action hardly slowed the Bulldogs (3-3 overall, 3-1 league), who received a double and two RBIs from Bryan Bradley. They will play the Longhorns (1-4-1, 1-2-1) again at 3:30 p.m. Friday in San Jose.

Sobrato totaled eight hits while holding Leigh to three.

Acorns trying to snap slide at Branham

A pair of rough innings were pivotal in two straight losses that pushed the Live Oak Acorns that much farther from their 2-1 start in the Mount Hamilton.

In make-up game from Friday, Live Oak (4-4, 2-3) fell 8-3 at Santa Teresa on Monday, missing an opportunity to take the season series with the defending-league champions, then dropped a 6-5 marathon Wednesday to visiting Branham. A win Friday against the Bruins would do wonders — or at least give the Acorns some breathing room in their quest to take 2 of 3 from each league foe.

They were in good position to win Monday until the Saints (4-3, 1-2) put across seven runs in the fourth inning. Cody Van Aken and Ken Hall had two hits apiece, and Matt Zarubi drove in a pair of runs for Live Oak, which committed four errors.

Junior ace Rich Martinez (2-1) struck out three Santa Teresa batters in as many innings.

Wednesday, the Acorns lost hold of a three-run lead in the third inning, then tied it 4-4 in the bottom half only to give up two more runs down the stretch, including the go-ahead score in the ninth.

Live Oak made the most of six hits against the first-place Bruins (5-2, 3-0). Hall provided two more, a double and a single that bumped the senior’s average up to .375, and Martinez collected two RBIs.

Friday’s rematch at Branham High School is scheduled to begin at 3:30.
