Hike up El Toro

My family and I look forward to the hike up El Toro each year but sometimes miss it because we don’t know when it is. What about this year?

This year the hike up El Toro Mountain is early: Saturday morning, April 2, at 8 and 10am. It is organized by the Morgan Hill Historical Society and helped along by the Boy Scouts.

Also as before, geologist Peter Anderson will give his talk about what – in the world of dirt and rock – the hordes of hikers will see on the trek. And he will put to rest the age old question “Is El Toro an extinct volcano?”

Both hikes start from the Historical Museum, 600 W. Main Ave., behind the library, with refreshments. The museum will be open so plan to take a few minutes and wander through. Next year is the city’s centennial and you might need to know this stuff. Under trivia, the mountain used to be called “Murphy’s Peak,” after the city’s founding family.

Wear a hat, sturdy shoes and sunscreen and carry water. Don’t forget your camera. The view is mighty fine.

Rolled up sidewalks

My husband and I are late owls. We went looking for somewhere to eat in Morgan Hill the other day after 10 pm and didn’t find anything. Where can I go in Morgan Hill? Do I have to go to Gilroy?

Caller, we know what you mean; we too have been on the prowl for someplace – anyplace – to get a bite to eat late at night. Alas, your choices are few.

Lyon’s was open 24 hours for a while but it closed. Scrambl’z, now in Lyon’s space on East Dunne Avenue, is open to 10pm Sunday through Thursday and until 11pm Fridays and Saturdays. Marie Callender’s is open to 10pm nightly.

Denny’s Restaurant, a 24-hour affair, plans to come in with In-N-Out Burger at the northwest corner of Cochrane Road and Highway 101.

More interesting food could be in the offing late if the sports bar and grill planned for the old theater building, 17330 Monterey Road, next to Rosy’s at the Beach downtown is able to open. Owner David Scoffone and partners expect to stay open late but, since they have just asked the city for a year’s extension before beginning work, it will be a while.

Caffe, Kaffe, Vin (which translates as coffee, coffee, wine in several languages) in the old 1905 Votaw Building at the northeast corner of Monterey Road and East Second Street downtown, is a coffee bar now but will soon extend into Morgan Hill’s first-ever wine bar.

Owner Cinda Meister (BookSmart and Thinker Toys) says they will be open at least until 9pm during the week and until 11pm or even midnight on weekends.

CKV, even now, always has a supply of tasty food: soups, lasagne, quiches and more, plus coffee, sodas and tea, of course.

But for now, I suppose the best we can recommend in Morgan Hill is the 24-hour Safeways at East Dunne and U.S. 101 and in Tennant Station, Tennant Avenue and Monterey Road.

While the deli won’t be open, there are prepared sandwiches, salads, sushi and more in the cases near the deli – as long as you don’t want it heated up. Sorry the news isn’t better.

If you’re willing to journey to Gilroy there is a Denny’s at 8425 San Ysidro Ave. off Leavesley Road, and Jeffrey’s at 5955 Travel Park Circle, but your best bet there is the Black Bear Diner at Leavesley Road and Murray Avenue.
