Community Solutions, the largest nonprofit human services agency in southern Santa Clara County, will celebrate strong women in history with its fourth annual play.

“Historias de Mi Madre IV; A Feminist Anthology,” explores the role of women during important historical events. The bilingual play will be performed at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, 2010 at the Gavilan College Theatre, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Gilroy. There is a suggested $10 donation, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Due to mature content, the play may not be appropriate for children.

“This year, our goal is to highlight the strength, courage and determination inherent in all women,” said Rosa Revuelta, sexual assault and prevention services manager for Community Solutions. “We want to honor and celebrate not just famous women in history, but the female heroes all around us.”

This will be the fourth year Lupe Maldonado brings life to the character of Grandma Lupita in “Historias de Mi Madre.” “I volunteer in this play because we need to eradicate violence from our world. I feel the time I give to this endeavor is very worthwhile. I dedicate my efforts to my mother who has survived many hardships to raise her family. She is my hero,” Maldonado said.

During the 2009-10 fiscal year, Community Solutions provided services to 716 domestic violence victims, 150 sexual assault survivors and five victims of human trafficking. Services include emergency confidential shelter, legal advocacy, court accompaniment, peer counseling, case management, safety planning, and resource and referral.

Community Solutions’ mission is to create opportunities for positive change by promoting and supporting the full potential of individuals, the strengths of families and the well being of our community.
