After half a season of watching their own pitcher, ace Juliette Bowers, shut down opposing teams, it was the Acorns’ turn on Saturday.
Running into a buzzsaw that was the Carlmont pitcher, the Live Oak High softball team got just two hits and dropped a 2-0 decision in the Live Oak-sponsored Circle of Champions tournament Gold Bracket opener at Twin Creeks last weekend.
Despite the loss, LO coach Barry McDonnell said he was happy with the way his team battled against a very good Carlmont team.
“We hit the ball pretty good in spite of the hit total,” McDonnell said. “We got runners on but we couldn’t get the big hit. But I’m really happy with the way we battled. We should be ready for league this week.”
LO (7-2 overall) got a solid performance from Bowers, who allowed just two hits of her own and a single earned run.
April Herrera had both Acorn hits.
League rival Notre Dame Salinas won the tourney title, beating Valley Christian 4-1 in the finale.
The Acorns host Salinas in their league opener on Thursday at 3:45pm at Community Park.
LO track
As the lone Live Oak High entry, junior Cobbie Jones turned in a solid time in her mile run heat. Competing in the slow heat, according to LO coach Dean Raymond, Jones finished second in 5:10.50, just a second and a half off her PR. Overall, Jones finished 17th, trailing Saratoga’s Alicia Follmar by 16 seconds.
LO is now set to compete at the Samuelson Co-Ed Relays at Hollister-San Benito High today, that is if the weather allows.
Sobrato baseball
Sobrato High’s junior varsity baseball team fell 2-1 at Gilroy on Saturday. Despite Bulldog starter Ryan Evanger’s four scoreless innings, the Mustangs scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Sobrato’s Billy Hill had two hits and scored a run for the Bulldogs, who fell to 2-2 overall. Sobrato is scheduled to play in the Carmel Tournament this week.
Sobrato track
At Thursday’s junior varsity meet, both Sobrato teams were victorious at Live Oak.
Top performers for Sobrato came from Katie Alton, Ashley Grose, Russ Tirey, Matt Kellet, and Murilo Almeida. LO’s Victor Kalata also did very well, winning the 100, 200 and anchoring the Acorns’ winning 4×400 relay team.
Correction:
Due to inaccurate information, the event in which Sobrato’s Carissa Pausanos competes was incorrectly reported in Saturday’s sports section. She competes with the 4×100 shuttle hurdles relay team not the 4×100 relay team.
