COLUMBUS, OHIO — Cal senior Dustin Muhn of Live Oak High School scored a try Sunday as the Golden Bears lost 31-26 to Utah in the 7-on-7 rugby College Championship Invitational Final in Columbus, Ohio.
Muhn scored on a 30-meter sprint as Cal built a 14-7 lead in the first half. Muhn also had a try in the Golden Bears’ 36-0 quarterfinal win over Tennessee earlier Sunday.
BASEBALL
Senior pitcher Kyle Mosbrucker, a Live Oak alumnus, was part of the Linfield College team that placed third in the NCAA Division III Tournament this week in Grand Chute, Wis.
Coached by former MLB great Scott Brosius, Linfield finished a program-best 37-12 this year. The Wildcats ended the season with a 12-9 loss Monday to SUNY-Cortland.
Mosbrucker and his graduating teammates accepted diplomas before the championship game the following day.
ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
Seniors Steven Fernandez and Dominic Leach, and Katie Rick of Live Oak, and Ryan Williams and Melissa Cachopo of Sobrato were named Athletes of the Year by their respective schools this week.
Also, Live Oak honored seniors Ryan Muir and Niki Patel as Student Athletes of the Year. Muir’s GPA was 4.2 and Patel’s was 4.26.
TRACK AND FIELD
Blossom Valley Athletic League officials caught Sobrato coach Fred Rios by surprise when they relayed a certificate to him stating his boys track and field team won a share of the Santa Teresa Division title this spring.
Rios and several coaches were under the impression that the championship goes to the team with the best cumulative total of dual-meet wins and points scored in the Santa Teresa Finals meet. The title is actually determined by dual meets alone.
The Bulldogs tied Willow Glen — winner of the division championship meet — for the best mark at 6-1 and legitimately earned Sobrato’s first league team title in track and field.
“We have a banner to hang up,” said Rios, who is wrapping up his first year as head coach. “I couldn’t have asked for more from this team as a whole.”
The Martin Murphy track and tield team won a third consecutive league title and qualified 53 athletes for the section championships at Oak Grove High School.
The Mustangs finished third out of 21 schools and crowned seven individual champions: Joseph Nguyen and Mariah Cervantes (shot put); Elizabeth Tran and Jonathon Lu (high jump); Afari La Anyane and Jaclyn Pereira (hurdles) and Kristy Martinez (discus).
Correction: The print version of Friday’s Sports Briefs section incorrectly listed Live Oak’s boys Athletes of the Year. Fernandez and Leach are co-honorees.
