Morgan Hill – The Sobrato Bulldogs boys basketball team was mauled by the Santa Clara Bruins, 69-43 Monday night.

“It did not go very well,” said Sobrato coach Lawrence Crawford. “Santa Clara really took it to us. They beat us quite soundly.”

The Bulldogs were stagnant on offense and had a hard time competing man-to-man with the Bruins. Santa Clara took Sobrato’s offense out of its game, forcing the Bulldogs to get away from their passing strategy.

Mubarik Abdullahi led Sobrato with 17 points and Marqus Crawford contributed 16 points in the loss.

“It’s difficult to find a bright spot when you lose by 26 points, but we shot pretty good from the free throw line,” explained Crawford. “We really didn’t play that well at all. One of their players scored 27 points alone, we obviously didn’t cover him too well. They were able to get everyone involved.”

The Bulldogs made 12 of 17 free throw attempts, including Crawford’s 5-for-5 and Abdullahi’s 7-for-9.

Sobrato has a week off before they face Independence next Wednesday.

“This is the perfect time to have an eight day break,” said Crawford. “A week off gives us an opportunity to back up, watch film and focus on getting better. I’m still encouraged we just need to step back, adjust and get back to basics. We’re a young team and things tend to break down in tight situations. We all need to get back to the fundamentals.”
