On the Morgan Hill ballot, the vote that will have the most lasting and direct impact on the community is Measure G, the $198.3 million school bond. Vote Yes and there will be a local funding source for a variety of needed improvements to aging school facilities and upgrades in technological capabilities.
The Morgan Hill Unified School District is a key quality-of-life component to our community, and making a long-term investment in our public schools – an investment that the state of California cannot take away, suspend or tamper with – is critical to the quality of education.
Thought the anti-tax sentiment related to this ballot is understandable with so many government agencies asking taxpayers for so much money, Measure G stands out. It is local. It will have a direct impact and it is, in fact, “a necessary evil.”
Our schools are old and in need of repair. Whether it’s a roof or an air conditioning unit or a wireless connectivity upgrade, there should be a source to draw from for capital needs. The school district cannot depend on the state, so it is up to the voters to take on the approximate burden of $59 a year for every $100,000 in assessed value of property that comes with the bond’s passage. Those capital funds will help keep the school district, which has done a truly outstanding job with budgeting despite difficult times, on solid ground when it comes to having funds available for the classroom.
Measure G’s passage will make sure that the financial decisions aren’t about choosing between  fixing a crumbling roof or laying off a teacher.
A 55 percent supermajority vote is needed for approval.
Measure G is our top affirmative recommendation. Superintendent Wes Smith and the school board have earned every confidence that the funds will be used carefully and appropriately.
Voters considering a No vote on any and all tax-related measures, should stop and think about Measure G.
On a pure financial basis, better schools boost property values. That makes every property more valuable and the likelihood of attracting better businesses to Morgan Hill greater. In short, it’s a value-added measure that will pay off for the community in many ways.
Vote Yes on Measure G, not just for schools, but for making the entire community of Morgan Hill an even better place to live.
