The San Francisco Giants’ players will not be the only stars on the field at AT&T Park prior to Saturday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.
Morgan Hill’s Nancy Avina and Alejandro Naranjo are among 10 students who will be honored at the Aug. 10 Education Day organized by the Giants Community Fund.
Education Day recognizes recipients of the Harmon and Sue Burns Scholarship, awarded each year to 10 eighth-grade Junior Giants participants. Award-winners, who receive a $2,500 scholarship, are chosen based on their leadership skills, character, academic potential and program involvement.
This year marks the 100th scholarship being awarded, bringing the total amount awarded through the program to nearly $300,000.
Former San Francisco Giants first baseman J.T. Snow, a special assistant with the club, will speak to the scholars about the importance of education during a pre-game reception in the Executive Meeting Room on the Suite Level of the stadium.
In addition, the Giants Community Fund will honor the incoming and graduating classes of scholars and present education grants to six Bay Area educational nonprofit organizations during the pre-game Home Plate Ceremony.
The Giants Community Fund, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, collaborates with the San Francisco Giants by using baseball as a forum to encourage underserved youth and their families to live healthy, productive lives. The fund supports Junior Giants leagues throughout Northern California, Nevada and Oregon and provides assistance to targeted community initiatives in the areas of education, health and violence prevention. Since its inception in 1991, the fund has donated more than $15 million to various community programs.
