An $8,860 raise for Santa Clara County Executive Pete Kutras Jr. was unanimously approved by the Board of Supervisors.

Kutras’ salary will grow by 4 percent next year, to $232,575. The other 158 employees in the office will receive an average 3 percent raise.

Supervisor Don Gage said the salary still puts Kutras below his colleagues in comparable counties.

“For the job Pete is doing, this raise is well-deserved,” Gage said.

“We’ve had significant budget problems and he’s getting them resolved. He’s done an outstanding job.”

Kutras, a Morgan Hill resident, has not received a pay increase since he was promoted from acting county executive in April 2003.

The executive office acts in support of the Supervisors and other county agencies. It’s responsible for juggling the budget and ensuring implementation of legislation and Board policy.

This is the first raise the office has received since December 2002.

Three elected officials – District Attorney George Kennedy, Sheriff Laurie Smith, and Assessor Larry Stone – will see their salaries go up by 3 percent starting in February.

Their six-digit salaries will increase $6,672, $5,432, and $4,518, respectively.

Increases for the remaining staff members are expected to take effect in mid-January, after Kutras receives performance evaluations from department heads.
