Michelle Martinez, a senior at Sobrato High School, is this week’s Student of the Week.

What inspires you?
Like Laura Simms, who is a coach, said, “I’m inspired by risk.” I absolutely believe in the saying that asserts mistakes are okay. I aid those students that are so scared to fail that they give up. They give up doing homework or keeping a daily record of what they learn because they believe they aren’t good enough. The fact that I can tell them that it’s okay to take the risk to fail is what inspires to continue to help my peers.
What is your favorite subject in school, and why?
From the moment I learned to count, math has been my favorite subject. I really like how there’s an infinite way of working with them and somehow still get the same result. I like taking the challenge when my family holds a competition to see who can solve a math problem the fastest. Math is everywhere and never ending.
If you had the power to change one thing in the world, what would it be?
If I had the power to change one thing in the world it would be the fact that people are starving. Hunger is no joke and when you see children starving it has to be the saddest thing you could ever witness. People who are starving don’t choose to not eat, they are missing a basic necessity of life and when everyone else has that necessity and you don’t, it’s tragic to think you’re actually not living. You’re surviving.
If you could go anywhere, where would you go?
If I could go anywhere it would be Mexico to visit my family. My parents haven’t seen my grandparents in over 12 years and it would be a big deal to be able to see them.
Name one big challenge in your life right now.
A challenge I have in my life right now is attempting to find the time to work. I know many people that can handle multiple things such as work, sports, clubs, volunteering and homework. I salute those people because between basketball and school I don’t have much time to do anything else. I would love to work in just about anything, but finding flexible working hours is not easy. I’ll eventually find something, but it’s up to me to manage my time and how to spend it.
What is your dream job?
My dream has always been to travel and so naturally my dream job happens to be a flight attendant. I love seeing new faces and meeting new people.
What are your three favorite things?
Basketball, reading and animals.
Favorite book:
“Wuthering Heights” by Emily Bronte.
What do you want to do after high school?
After high school I’m hoping to go to my dream school: UC Santa Barbara and major in finance and accounting. I want to graduate from UC Santa Barbara after four years and apply to become a flight attendant wherever there is an opening.
Something that makes you smile:
My family makes me smile everyday.
Top three most played songs on your iTunes or iPod:
“Olivia” by One Direction
“Like I’m Gonna Lose You” by Meghan Trainor
“Hotline Bling” by William Singe (cover)
