Dear Editor,
The Fourth of July in April? It’s time to begin our celebration. This year, Morgan Hill Independence Day Inc. has chosen our theme to be “America, My Home, Sweet, Home.”
One of the activities for our community’s youth is an essay contest. Students in grade two through six throughout Morgan Hill and San Martin are invited to enter the contest. Students may want to write about the things that make America a great place to live – our history, scenic beauty, or freedom.
And don’t forget the courage, bravery, and sacrifice of those who made this land our “home, sweet, home.”
Or, students may want to write about Morgan Hill or San Martin, great places to live because of our scenic beauty (green hills and Coe Park), history (from prunes to poppy jasper), youth activities (Scouts, 4-H, sports,) etc.
n Essays should be no longer than one page in length for students in second and third grade, and no longer than two pages in length for students in grades four, five and six.
n Students should place their name, school, grade level and teachers name on the back of the essay. Home schoolers should add their email or phone number.
n Essays are due no later than Wednesday, April 6. Classroom teachers should collect the essays and send them to the school office where they may be picked up on the afternoon of Friday, April 8. Home Schoolers may drop their essays off at Booksmart in Morgan Hill.
n Winning essays will be published in Morgan Hill’s Fourth of July program of events.
And there’s more.
n There will be a $100 savings bond issued to a winner in primary (grades two and three) and Intermediate grade (four through six). There will also be a $50 savings bond to second and third place winners in primary and intermediate grades.
n Our winners and runners up will receive two trophies, a personal prize as well as a trophy to be given to their school for proud display. They will also receive a T-shirt.
n Winners and runners up will be invited to be guests of honor at the Patriotic Sing where they will receive their rewards.
n They will ride on a fire truck in Morgan Hill’s July 4 Parade on Monday, July 4.
n Several essays will be on display at family festival at Community Park on July 4.
So sharpen up those pencils, turn on your computers and write about “America, My Home, Sweet Home.”
