Stop by an open house to learn more about the South County’s groundwater issues from 3 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The Santa Clara Valley Water District encourages public input on its services and programs, including its proposal of a no rate increase this year. The district reports that it eliminated positions and reduced costs to keep the average rate near $10 per month for the third year in a row.

The District encourages residents to drop in at their convenience Thursday, with presentations each hour at the Morgan Hill Community Center at 17000 Monterey St.

The district uses the monthly charges to operate reservoirs and buy imported water to replenish the groundwater basin. Groundwater refreshed by the district account for two-thirds of water used in South County by farmers, ranchers, residents and businesses, according to the district.

The proposed charges for 2010-11 are $16.50 per acre-foot of agricultural water and $275 per acre-foot of all other water; the rate is a zero percent increase from last fiscal year.
