Thirty-four students from St. Catherine
’s Catholic School, having duly finished eighth grade, were
promoted to ninth on Friday, June 6, to cheers and pats on the back
from family, teachers and friends.
Thirty-four students from St. Catherine’s Catholic School, having duly finished eighth grade, were promoted to ninth on Friday, June 6, to cheers and pats on the back from family, teachers and friends.
After a Baccalaureate Mass, the promotion ceremony went on to celebrate, not only the entire class, but individual achievements in the form of awards and scholarships.
Knights of Columbus Religion Scholarships were awarded to Amanda Morgan, Nicolyna Enriquez, Chelsea Ellefson, Nathan Fiala and Robert Valenti for “strength and leadership in their religious training,” according to a representative from the Knights.
The David Rodriguez Service Award was given to Carolyn Horning for showing the same spirit custodian David Rodriguez showed in his 25 years on the job. No task was too big and he was always there when needed, St. Catherine officials said.
Nine students earned the President’s Award for Academic Excellence: Christopher Carin, Lisa Deluna, Chelsea Ellefson, Casandra Falletta, Thomas Guinane, Allison Haupt, Jennifer Lesnick, Maria Meehan and Robert Valenti. These students demonstrated outstanding effort, which enabled them to meet the challenging standards set by the school, including having earned a grade point average of 3.5 or above for the school year.
President’s Award winners receive a certificate and a pin.
The highest honor of all is the St. Catherine Scholarship, given to the student who stands out in grades, effort, conduct and taking part in the school community. Students must apply for the honor and give a short speech to faculty. The $100 scholarship – to be used at any high school – was awarded to Allison Haupt, who gave the commencement speech.
A reception for the 34 students and their families followed and then, it was on to ninth grade.
