Pirates provide challenge despite lopsided 5-0 Bulldog
victory
A flurry of second-half scoring gave the Sobrato girls soccer team a 5-0 win over Silver Creek on Friday to open Blossom Valley Athletic League West Valley Division play.

“They were tough competition and I don’t think the score gave them enough credit,” coach Stephanie Pearson said of the Pirates.

With the win, Sobrato now boasts an 4-2-1 overall record and 1-0 league record.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead behind a goal from Ashley Grose, although Pearson said she thought the girls could have played better.

“We came out a little flat,” Pearson said. “There was just not enough energy.”

Pearson said when the second half started, the girls went back to what they had practiced and tacked on four goals, two coming from Grose. Katie Alton and Melissa Kimbell both contributed goals in the half.

“All the goals came from crosses and that is what we were working on,” Pearson said. “We were able to build plays and possess the ball for most of the game.”

Pearson said she and the girls both were thrilled to see the tactic work.

“It was exciting to see that most of the goals came from that,” Pearson said.

The Bulldogs had one additional opportunity from a Grose header that skimmed off the cross bar.

“Ashley had this header that would have been one of the nicest goals,”

Pearson also said that along with the explosive offense, the defense played equally well to earn its third shut out in as many games.

She said initially the girls needed to get accustomed to the style of play from Silver Creek, but by the second half had the attack completely figured out.

“They played with three forwards,” Pearson said. “It took them a while to figure out how to adjust to that. … They came out in the second half to play. It was nice to see them get the shut out.”

Pearson also noted that when the two schools met up last year, the score went the other way.

“They last time they played Silver Creek, the score was something like four or five to three,” Pearson said. “It was good to see the defense was able to get the shut out.”

The Bulldogs will continue BVAL play on Wednesday when they take on San Jose High Academy on the road.
