Ok, I haven’t run in a road race – i.e. known now as a fun run – since the last time I took on the Bay to Breakers which was a very long time ago. I’ve “graduated” to the gym combination of the elliptical machine, the treadmill and the bike. But the 2nd Annual Bulldog Fun Run, slated for Saturday, Sept. 28, just be my easy ticket to try a 5K. If nobody my age shows up, and I finish, hey that counts for first place, right? Starting line is the back of Ann Sobrato High School with a 5 and 10K course that goes down Burnett Avenue to the Coyote Creek bike path. No big hills, so maybe, just maybe I could pull this off without risking a post-run, month-long injury hiatus. It’s $30 for registration and a shirt. Funds benefit the Sobrato High cheerleading squads, so sis, boom, bah, cross the finish line … yah, yah, yah … now I need to visit the new running store in town owned by Paul Rakitin at 16999 Suite D on Monterey Road and get the right shoes … yah …
Yah, yah, no, no … didn’t know that CordeValle in San Martin made the Forbes Magazine la-ti-da list of “Ultimate U.S. Vacation Spots.” Tabbed as “a resort in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains” the magazine touts the “decadent and distinctive” amenities and experiences like the “caviar facial” and the “orange pumpkin body wrap.” Now that sounds like a raffle prize Victoria Battison would have no trouble securing for the upcoming Morgan Hill Rotary Club Golf Tournament – golf for two on the fabulous course and a day at the spa for two – all the orange pumpkin (is there another color, really?) you could possible want to wrap yourself in included. Suggestion for Rotary sheriff: How many Morgan Hill Rotarians have had an orange pumpkin body wrap? All those who didn’t raise their hands a $1 fine. BTW, the golf tourney is at Eagle Ridge in Gilroy on Friday, Sept. 27 from high noon to 5:30 p.m. Call David Conragan, 408-425-4527 or email go**@mo**************.org for all the divot details. Dan McCranie, co-owner with wife Kathy of Ladera Grill, is a major sponsor and has donated one of the raffle prizes – dinner for 16 at beautiful Ladera Grill downtown with a superbly prepared meal by Executive Chef Tony Garcia. That’s an awesome graduation-sized party prize.
Prize for the community that together we passed the library tax, Measure A, by a whopping margin – 81.39 percent of the vote. Whenever I drive by the library, I’m amazed at how full the parking lot is. Many people yak, yak, yak about how libraries are on their last legs due to the Internet, blah, blah, blah … It’s the same thing some babble about newspapers. Well folks, libraries and print edition newspapers are here for quite some time. Libraries have computers inside, newspapers have websites. It’s about transition, but both institutions remain relevant. To all those who mailed in a “Yes” ballot for the libraries, good for you. It’s $33 a year on the parcel tax bill and well worth every penny. Who knows, maybe the library can start opening on Sundays and Mondays, too.
Closing can’t come fast enough for the baseball season for Giants’ fans – enough pain already … just remember, spring training is just six months away … the Niners will be on TV every week … your SF Giants won two of the last three world championships … the Sharks are about to strap on the skates … and Indian summer is coming, the best time of the year in Northern California. So just write it off – baseball, like golf, can be a very humbling game.
Unhumble request … why can’t my bank’s ATM machine remember that I want information in English? Once I push that button a couple of times, it ought to be over and done with.
Just beginning is the gargantuan battle over public education here. Two charter school applications have lit the fuse on the dynamite that’s been lying around in town. Question 1: Why is it that everyone seems to believe parents will flock to the charter schools? (Is there a problem, or are all those parents nitwits?) Question 2: If the current Morgan Hill Charter School caters only to the rich why hasn’t the administration or school board done something about it?
