The second annual Ann Sobrato High School Festival of the Arts begins today, with events running through Friday May 15.
“We’re really focusing this year on student-generated visual and performing art,” teacher Gary Harmon, who along with Erik Kalish and Mark Masoni, puts on the event, said. “Of course, we’ve got a few celebrity guests participating again.”
The festival will kick off with West Side Story, the first theatrical collaboration between Sobrato and Live Oak high schools. Performances will be at 7 p.m. tonight and tomorrow, with a 2 p.m. matinee tomorrow.
On Monday, students will showcase visual and performing arts. The Sobrato Pops group will have a concert on Tuesday. Wednesday boasts a student film festival, followed Thursday by the ARTTEC Academy Awards.
The grand finale will be Friday, May 15, with a live studio taping of Backline, ARTTEC’s entertainment news program. The taping will include three guests, including Dishwalla, a pop music group known for their hit song “Counting Blue Cars.”
The event will be decidedly smaller than last year’s ambitious effort, which featured Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, hosts of the popular science-based cable show “Mythbusters,” and the rock band Smash Mouth, both of whom are based in San Jose. The opening and closing events last year were attended by more than 4,000 people.
Students with I.D. can buy one ticket and get one free at Saturday’s matinee or at Monday or Wednesday night’s events.
Tickets are $10 for the mezzanine level and $12 for the orchestra and can be purchased at the door or through ticketmaster.com.
“Every ticket purchased directly supports the goals of ARTTEC (Arts Related Technical Training for Entertainment Careers), by providing educational opportunities to students seeking careers in the entertainment industry, and helping to fund arts performances,” Harmon wrote in an e-mail to the Times.
