“Dear Red Phone, I noticed the city put in new street lights at Condit Road and East Main Avenue and it looks like they paved a path nearby as well. It’s nice, but who paid for that and where does it go?”

Red Phone: Dear Trail Chaser, The City announced at its Oct. 3 meeting that the Madrone Channel Trail is complete at a cost of $124,410. The existing Santa Clara Valley Water District service road was converted into a joint use trail for bikes and pedestrians, while also allowing access to the recharge channel along U.S. 101.

You can access the trail from Cochrane Road, Main Avenue near Condit Road, East Dunne Avenue and Tennant Avenue. The project was funded with $65,000 from the Park Impact Fund AB1600 and $154,000 through grants. The remainder went back into the park fund.

The City used Guerra Construction Group to do the work, which also included installing trail signs, access points, retaining walls, fence and gate modifications, trash cans and dog waste dispensers, according to the staff report. Red Phone jumped on the trail this weekend to avoid running along some busy streets – and it’s a nice addition for locals. Check it out, loyal caller.

“Dear Red Phone, are there any plans for Uvas Park Drive to be built between Wren Avenue and Laurel Drive? It has been on the maps for years and would take a lot of traffic off of Wren and Third.”

Red Phone: The Uvas Park Drive improvements are included on the City’s General Plan Circulation Element. The Circulation Element does not specify the timeframe for construction, according to Don Dey, the city’s transportation engineer.

“At this point in time Uvas Park Drive is not scheduled for construction in the near term (10 years or less). It will be constructed at some time after this near term schedule,” he said.  Maybe the next question is what can be done in the short term to alleviate traffic in that area?
