Dear readers, I present to you, Mr. Charles Dickens, a man of his time, the time of the Victorians - and also a man of our own modern time. Allow me to have the portentousness to suggest that Mr. Dickens, that titan of Victorian literature, if he were alive today, would find in our age a blend of social commentary and larger-than-life characters to fill a hundred great novels.

Today, the pet dog population in the United States is more than 67 million. But listen to this; there are more than 83 million cats living with human companions. Those darn cats. Somehow, they snuck up and took over as the most popular pet in America. Only fish outnumber them (there are an estimated 170 million pet fish in the United States), but that’s only because a lot of fish can fit in one small aquarium. So it seems that cats have it when it comes to being “top dog” in our homes.

The college admissions process is a confusing stew of acronyms, jargon and can’t-miss deadlines that’s difficult even for students who enjoy every advantage. Now imagine trying to navigate it if your parents didn’t attend college, aren’t native English speakers, or work long hours at low-paying jobs to make ends meet and don’t have the time or information to help.

If you attended the Morgan Hill Independence Day parade, you might have got a glimpse of screen goddess Marilyn Monroe. She wore a sensuous pink dress, sat in a convertible and waved with movie star poise. She might have even blown you a kiss. The 1950s-era actress is often impersonated by Morgan Hill resident Laurren Cowan. But our South Valley region has a true Marilyn Monroe connection, one involving a conspiratorial tale with no happy Hollywood ending.
