Online surveys empower public with a voice

A vital component of effective community leadership is getting feedback from the people who are most impacted by the quality of that leadership. Leaders need to know if what they are doing is working and taking the community in the right direction. If it isn’t working, they need to know the reasons for that failure. They also need to be open to hearing ideas from the public that can improve their organizations.

‘Confederates’ a well done lesson in media handling

The 47th TheatreWorks Silicon Valley season starts out with a strong production that fits well with current events. Confederates is set during a presidential campaign with a “snag.” The people who find it, work it, providing an example of how far the media will go get the story while staying within the law. It’s a story of how one almost innocent mistake can upset an entire future. Superbly written by playwright Suzanne Bradlbeer, three magnificent actors show how they manage the situation at hand.

Californians not equipped for The Great Chillpocolypse

By the time you read this, The Great California Chillpocolypse of 2013 will be over. At least, I hope it will be over. I haven't been this cold since I lived in Canada - and frankly, that's saying a lot. (And please don't get me started on Canadian summers. Suffice to say that about July 15, millions of Canadians emerge from their homes dressed in tank tops and shorts to bask in the balmy 65-degree weather. It's like being in Hell, if Hell were cold. And not, you know, filled with fire and brimstone.)

Conquering Clouds Rest

Last December in my “Getting Out” column in the sports section, I challenged my readers: On July 13, come with me on a long and difficult hike to the top of 9,931-foot Clouds Rest, a massive peak that rises 1,100 feet above Half Dome - Yosemite Valley's iconic landmark. During the intervening six months, we will take a series of hikes to prepare for the big day. Who among you has the stuff to take on the Clouds Rest Challenge?

Celebrate autumn and support the arts

As a native New Yorker, I still marvel at our region’s ideal weather even though I’ve lived here for 29 years. This year, as always, I look forward to the crisp air of autumn. Although not as dramatic as autumn in New York, I find the changing colors of leaves and the crunch underfoot as they cover sidewalks and yards invigorating. If you happen to see an adult woman skipping along the sidewalks while collecting leaves, it’s probably me.

I think Pinterest has ruined the world. And possibly it's quite evil.
