Comfort food of fall

Fall is upon us and soon, the familiar chill I have missed will set in. Around the beginning of October, I think about fresh apples and comfort food. On their own, they are delicious, but have you ever considered putting them together? This week, I feature a recipe where I have done just that.

Good times at community garage sale

Well, whether you were a buyer or seller, or maybe just a looker, I hope you had as much fun as Lady M and I had participating in Morgan Hill's community garage sale. We were sellers and I must admit we were a bit concerned when, after the first hour on Saturday, only one person had shown up. And he was selling magazine subscriptions - not really - but he found nothing that he couldn't live without from our collection of treasures. I really don't understand how that is possible since we put some of our most cherished possessions that a) we bought in some foreign land thinking they would remind us of where we had traveled - didn't happen; or b) are priceless objects d'art that had seen better times. For example, who could turn down an 18 inch by 24 inch wood carving of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy? Well, for some strange reason quite a few folks passed on this one before a very wise lady with an eye for a true value said, "my husband is a little nuts. He'll probably love this." So it finally was on its way to a new home. I just hope the nice lady's husband likes it as much as I did, long, long ago and doesn't decide to use it as kindling.

Enjoying the ‘Dog Days of Forever’

Like many people, we’ve had a number of great dogs over the years. When my husband and I were dating, for my birthday he bought me a miniature Dachshund I named Sam. It was then, when Sam was a puppy, I realized what bizarre little critters dogs are.

Creating the perfect home office

Gone are the days when you only had the choice of a desk and chair for your home office.  Today's home office furnishings options are all but endless.  So, first things first!  As with any decorating project, you first need to determine what you want to accomplish in your new home office, and then match those needs with the right furnishings.

‘1776’: A moment in history that we sometimes take for granted

We all know how this story will end; we all know what an important piece of history was made with the glorious words of Thomas Jefferson. What some of us do not know is that the Declaration of Independence was not signed on July 4, and was ratified and completely signed months later. But none of this takes away from the delight of A.C.T.'s production of “1776”.

New homes are back

Almost everywhere you look, small formally littered lots as well as larger vacant parcels are being developed into new homes. As we drive around Morgan Hill there is everything from low income senior apartments to luxury homes and everything in between.

A lesson in blackwood

How do you know if you should stop at part-score or game or proceed to slam? Usually, one of the partners will hold a stronger hand, and that is the hand which usually starts exploring slam. If neither hand is strong, both of you will usually be satisfied with “just” game or even part-score.

‘One Night With Janis Joplin’: The ultimate icon of the rock ‘n’ roll era

“One Night With Janis Joplin” with another cast is previewing on Broadway as we speak. San Jose Rep's bombastic production recreates some of Joplin's best moments delivered by the amazing talent of Kacee Clanton, who channels Joplin with eerie accuracy. Her voice comes across so raw and powerful and is so similar to Joplin's that you are transported to the ’60s when she reigned as queen of rock ‘n’ roll and brought her spot-on interpretations of this type of music. She delivers with no holds barred with one earthshaking song after another.

When women go from ‘miss’ to ‘ma’am’

There comes a time in every woman's life when she is called “Ma'am.” For some of us (ahem, me) that time comes early. Much, much earlier than any of us expect (again, that would be me).

Not your typical caramel corn

When was the last time you had caramel corn? It has probably been many years, came packaged with a prize and was most likely stale and unappealing. If it were not for the prize, many youngsters would avoid it too. This week, I am ready to change your mind about caramel corn and how wonderful and endless the possibilities can be.
