Our only professional sports event and we have to wave goodbye
Gorgeous time of year Indian Summer is in the Hayes Valley in San Martin where the PGA Golf professionals show up to play each fall in early October. Crisp CordeValle Golf Resort mornings yield to sunshiny warm afternoons at the Frys.Com Open. The views are as soothing as a Fred Couple’s swing. It’s a walk in a natural park interrupted by occasional roars from the happy crowd, announcements on the first tee … please welcome our 11:22 a.m. pairing … Two-time major champion Angel Cabrera from Argentina … and next to tee off 1997 British Open Champion Justin Leonard from Dallas, Texas ... and bellows from the beer-for-birdies bunch at the pavilion aside the 17th green.
Cemetery hosts Day of the Dead celebration
Halloween is fast-approaching, much to the pleasure of candy-loving children. The ancient Celts, who inhabited the area now occupied by Great Britain, Ireland and Normandy, believed that on this night, called “Samhain,” the spirits of the dead returned to earth, and they welcomed them with food and bonfires.
“Beer hole” gets plenty to cheer about, including one of the best shots of the day
The beer was flowing Saturday and the cheers were loud.
Crunch Time: Ben Crane’s eagle sets a strong tone for beer hole at Frys.com Open
Day three of the Frys.com Open is underway and the crowds are arriving to watch some good quality golf … and drink some beer.
Crunch Time: Day 2 leader enjoys South Valley
The leader after the morning round, Brooks Koepka, is no stranger to the South Valley.
Crunch Time: Erik Compton is full of courage
If you get the chance to follow any golfer this weekend, take the time to watch Erik Compton.
Crunch Time: Soaking in the early round at Frys.com Open
Today kicks off the last time the Frys.com Open will be in San Martin for at least a year. The tournament is moving to Napa next year, meaning this is the last chance to view the season opening tournament for a while.
Getting Out: A special journey on the John Muir Trail
The John Muir Trail is surely the most famous and the most beautiful wilderness path in the lower 48 states. Beginning at an elevation of 4,000 feet in Yosemite Valley, the trail follows the crest of the Sierra Nevada for 221 miles over eleven mountain passes to the summit of Mt. Whitney, at 14,495 feet, the highest point in the United States outside of Alaska.
International Gift Faire marks 25 years
The holiday season is quickly approaching, as is witnessed by the many displays already appearing in stores. One of the features of the fall season is a multiplicity of craft fairs, bazaars, boutiques or similar events. Worthy of special note is one held annually at a church in San Jose's Willow Glen neighborhood.
Volunteers pick and learn about harvest
What's better than sleeping in on the weekend? For me, it's helping one of our local wineries during their annual harvest. On an early Saturday morning in September, I was lucky enough to be a part of the Satori Cellars Volunteers - an enthusiastic group of friends, family and wine club members who join together to pick and sort grapes out in the vineyard.
