‘Black Santa’ supports world’s charities
In planning a vacation trip to the UK for this summer, I discovered a charming tradition in Belfast, Northern Ireland. This city was once known for its gun battles and explosions perpetrated by Roman Catholics and Protestants against each other. Now, however, Christmas brings these Christians together to aid the needy in their midst.

Love’s pure light … it’s the Spirit of Christmas
“Silent night, Holy night! All is calm, all is bright ...”
There’s more to that cute head tilt
Q: When our dog hears a funny noise, he tips his head sideways to listen. We think it's adorable, but why does he do this?
Home for the holidays …
This time of year, as family members gather for the holidays, is a great opportunity to hold an annual family meeting.
New library hours coming and let’s get that bumpy U.S. 101 stretch fixed
Seriously, no time like the present for a rousing rendition of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Nights and nights in the 20s. The garden is a mess and when I left the cut Christmas tree outside for one night and filled the red bucket with water, it froze solid as a hockey rink. Good thing we didn’t shell out for any front-porch poinsettias. Always hiccup on the poinsettia pronunciation ... poins easy, it’s the setia or setta part that’s the stumble.
Californians not equipped for The Great Chillpocolypse
By the time you read this, The Great California Chillpocolypse of 2013 will be over. At least, I hope it will be over. I haven't been this cold since I lived in Canada - and frankly, that's saying a lot. (And please don't get me started on Canadian summers. Suffice to say that about July 15, millions of Canadians emerge from their homes dressed in tank tops and shorts to bask in the balmy 65-degree weather. It's like being in Hell, if Hell were cold. And not, you know, filled with fire and brimstone.)
‘The Snow Queen’: The dark side of serendipity
When Hans Christian Anderson wrote “The Snow Queen” in 1845, he could never have fathomed in his wildest imagination (and as we all know he had a wild imagination), that his story would become a steampunk musical. He never dreamed that in the never, never, once-upon-a-time land of future theatre there was a director named Rick Lombardo and an associate director named Kirsten Brandt who would supply songs and lyrics and a reworked story. A talented Haddon Kime adds music to create an enchanting (at times confusing) “Snow Queen” that tells a story of valor, loyalty and the triumph of love.
Faith-filled dentist follows two careers
St. Peter and other apostles of the early church devoted themselves entirely to spreading the Gospel, living on money given by church members. St. Paul, a late addition to the group, frequently performed paid outside work so as not to financially burden the young churches he founded. Since his occupation was making tents, self-supporting or “non-stipendiary” ministry is often called “tentmaking.”
Time to check progress toward retirement goals
Now that another year is ending, it’s a good time to take stock of where you are on your journey toward financial security. Of course, you could find many different “measuring sticks” to assess your progress, but you can certainly gain considerable information just by asking yourself some basic questions.
