BYOB – no longer just for parties

Have you noticed the growing number of shoppers who are bringing their own bags to the store? They seem to be coming in many different colors, shapes and sizes. I’ve seen the retro canvas bags that were common in the ‘90s, slick bags with store logos, designer bags purchased on Melrose Boulevard, and even pocket bags that fold up into small pouches. There’s no escaping it – bringing your own bag is now “in.” What does your bag say about you?

“tokyo fish story” – A story of tradition and obsession

Mix tradition, obsession and inflexibility into a pan of sushi and you have the basics of Kimber Lee’s “tokyo fish story’.

A few do’s and don’ts for Fourth of July

Here it is, another Fourth of July and time to plan the picnics, the barbecues and of course, the fireworks. I am a veteran of many Independence Day celebrations, having attended them my entire life – well, except for that brief period when I lived in Canada and shockingly, nobody celebrated the Fourth of July. I think it was because a) they are a different country; and b) it’s too cold there in July to have outdoor celebrations.

Millions of Americans have been watching our federal government wrestle with the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obama Care. They have produced hundreds of commercials and held countless press conferences speaking to our need for humanity and sensibility.

Change constant for local news business – except it’s still all about our town

More than a decade ago, as the dawn of the information age turned into mid-morning, our industry hemmed and hawed: Should we charge customers to read the news online? Pros and cons were tossed about like sports cliches in post-game interviews. And, as an industry, we took it “one game at a time” which turned into “one year at a time” which, in my view, turned into a decade of madness.

Pledge of Allegiance created to sell flags

Assemblywoman Shannon Grove earlier this year told supporters at a campaign fundraiser that Assemblyman Luis Alejo, who represents Gilroy and Hollister, does not say the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag at state legislative sessions. Other assembly members who work with Alejo say Grove’s accusation is untrue and Alejo has even led the flag salute. The hullabaloo sparked my curiosity to discover the genesis of the pledge to our nation’s flag. The truth will no doubt alarm Assemblywoman Grove, a Republican. Our nation’s Pledge of Allegiance was written by – gasp! – a socialist.
