Dear Editor,
An open letter to Speaker pro Tempore Fiona Ma:
Thank you very much for sponsoring AB400. Your support of this legislation has confirmed what I’ve known all along but wasn’t able to actually articulate accurately to my business friends and associates.
Your proposed legislation gives me all that I need now to have a frank discussion along the lines of your inability to separate the real budget problems of today and the realities that small businesses have to deal with each and every day.
I’m embarrassed on your behalf for making such an outrageous move to further burden small businesses.
Your legislation directly “targets” small businesses which are the same businesses that you claim are the backbone of the economic recovery. Clearly, your legislative agenda does not support your propaganda.
Your desire to improve your constituent’s lifestyle is noble for them, in the short term. The adjustments that small businesses will have to make to compensate for this in the long term will reduce the wages and benefits that your constituents earn now. Of course, you’ll be voted back into office by the time business owner’s have to make those adjustments so you’ll win your office back, this time.
What will you do for your constituents when the end result is that this will have contributed to higher unemployment, lower wages and the reduction or elimination of employer paid benefits that exceed government requirements such as 401K’s, vacation pay, H.S.A’s, etc.?
I was hopeful that this state’s leadership was truly engaged in improving this economy, working through the budget problems, getting the fiscal problems under control but your legislation shows that it’s simply not the case.
I feel compelled to remind you that this state is in a fiscal crisis. Businesses are working on low margins, people are paying record prices for fuel, homes are being foreclosed upon and nothing, absolutely nothing has been done to reduce ANY burden on small businesses. Small businesses really are the key to getting our economy growing quickly, I just wish you really knew that and we could see some legislation that would promote that.
