A Morgan Hill man suffered fatal injuries when he was ejected from his vehicle during a traffic collision early Sunday morning, according to authorities.

About 12:40am Feb. 2, a 22-year-old Morgan Hill resident was driving a 2010 Hyundai northbound on U.S. 101 north of Bailey Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Hyundai was traveling at a “high rate of speed” as the driver approached the rear of a 2020 Mitsubishi.

For an unknown reason, the Hyundai driver allowed the front of the vehicle to collide with the rear of the Mitsubishi, police said. The Hyundai then went out of control and traveled into the path of a 2019 Freightliner tractor-trailer.

The Freightliner struck the Hyundai, causing the smaller vehicle to overturn and catch fire, according to authorities. When the Hyundai overturned, the driver was ejected from the vehicle and was struck by a 2012 Mazda.

The driver of the Hyundai suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision, police said. Authorities have not yet identified the driver.

The accident is under investigation. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision, according to the CHP.

Anyone with information about the accident can call the CHP Hollister-Gilroy area office at (408) 848-2324.
