Can you belt out a tune?
Morgan Hill’s newest music series, Thursday Street Dance, is looking for a few good crooners and songstresses to serenade the crowd on West Second Street on Thursday nights throughout the summer.
The “Morgan Hill Idol” singing competition will take place between song sets of whichever band is playing that night. The Thursday Street Dance will take place from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday nights, starting June 18 with the 70s and 80s pop rock band Fourth Street Dance Band.
Blues, rock and rockabilly bands are also featured players throughout the summer.
The Thursday Street Dance takes place in the same location that the Friday Night Music Series did for more than a decade, on West Second Street at Monterey Road.
This year, the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce voted to move the Friday Night Music Series to the Community and Cultural Center’s amphitheater. This event takes place Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m.
Downtown merchants came together to form the new series at the old spot to assuage their fears that, with the Friday Night event removed from the downtown core, there would be less foot traffic from Main Avenue to Third Street on Monterey Road.
Patty Curtis, owner of Carta Luna Gift Shop on West Second and a founder of the Thursday Street Dance, said 10 people have registered to participate in the competition, which includes teens and adults, and they’re looking for more, too. They’ll be taking competitors throughout the summer. Each week, two or three competitors will go head to head, with a winner each week.
Then, the weekly winners will compete in a final competition on September 10. The winner will receive eight hours in a recording studio, and four CDs with music from the session and a cover design for the CD, Curtis said. There will also be consolation prizes.
