Leadership Morgan Hill’s Class of 2009 took the program’s name to heart: They’re taking the lead in community volunteerism.
The class will host Morgan Hill’s first Community Volunteer Faire from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center.
More than 40 nonprofit organizations aching for more volunteers will staff booths, ready to sign up residents eager to get started with local altruism.
The Leadership group, Morgan Hill’s 24th class, came to the idea after discussing through several others.
“We were looking for a way to bring the community together,” said Larry McElwain, project leader. “There were a lot of good ideas, but nothing was getting everyone’s support. We all agreed that, in these tough times, everyone could use a little help and the local community service groups are especially hard hit by the economic downturn. Instead of reaching out to one group, we decided to try to help as many as possible. The Volunteer Faire seemed like the best way to help them out. It has just grown from there.”
There will be raffle prizes, a kids corner, refreshments and a free giveaway to the first 300 attendees.
The event is sponsored by Saint Louise Regional Hospital, Custom Chrome, and Kaiser Permanente
The volunteer faire is inspired by and coincides with President Barack Obama’s National Day of Service on Sept. 11. Obama’s United We Serve initiative challenges Americans to engage in community service.
Leadership members hope to make the Volunteer Faire an annual fixture in Morgan Hill’s nonprofit scene.
