John Lang

The City of Morgan Hill appointed John Lang—a former economic development official for the city—as its new Housing and Economic Mobility Director. Lang started his new position Jan. 21.

“The city is committed to meeting the housing needs of its current and future residents while also ensuring residents have a pathway to economic success,” said Morgan Hill Assistant City Manager Edith Ramirez. “Adding the Economic Mobility to the Housing Director position elevates the position, recognizing the need to provide upward mobility opportunities as a housing sustainability strategy, and it complements the City’s economic development program.”

According to the ELEVATE Morgan Hill report, 50% of Morgan Hill residents are cost-burdened, and 28% rely on some form of financial assistance, says a press release from the city.

The data also reveal a racial and ethnic disparity, with Hispanic/Latinx residents with limited English proficiency disproportionately impacted.

The ELEVATE Morgan Hill report highlights the interconnectedness of jobs and housing, according to city staff. It seeks to support upward mobility by providing services that connect residents with job opportunities and housing resources and advancing efforts to create a stronger sense of belonging.

John Lang was selected as the Housing and Economic Mobility Director after a nationwide search and competitive selection process through a recruitment firm. Lang brings a wealth of experience to this critical role, city staff said.

With 25 years of public service experience, Lang’s previous roles included Economic Vitality Manager for Mountain View, Economic Development Manager for Morgan Hill, and Chief Economist for San Jose. Lang holds master’s degrees in economics, public administration, and urban planning. He also brings teaching experience from his 14 years as a lecturer at San Jose State University.

“John is a proven leader in the region, and we are excited to welcome him back to our Community. He will be a great addition to the team,” City Manager Christina Turner said.

Lang said, “I’m excited to rejoin the City of Morgan Hill team. This is a great city with a ‘can-do’ spirit, and I’m eager to help lead efforts that improve the quality of life for our community.”
