Yes, we know the current building at West Main and Monterey Road has a plaque that mentions him but we mean large words painted over the new building’s entrance. Or engraved in the metal canopy or engraved in marble. Whatever. And that photo of him looking stern in his police uniform should adorn the lobby along, possibly, with a short summary of what he did for the department (if short is possible).
At least one-third of those who attended Moreno’s memorial service in November did so because they know his wife, Elena, or met him since he retired. They were really surprised at the depth of respect people who “ knew him when” still held for his integrity and, of course, for his sometimes notoriously successful police work.
Not many people remembered when Moreno captured four bank robbers single-handedly by shooting out their car’s tires while dodging their bullets. The stuff of legend.
So, we look forward to the dedication of the John Moreno Police Building, when the Morgan Hill Police Department moves into its new 46,000-square foot building next year.
