Local efforts to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina come in many shapes and sizes, including dancing grandmothers and enterprising middle school students.
Bolstering national efforts, local organizations and individuals are giving Morgan Hill residents an opportunity to help:
• Some local churches are taking donations, including St. Catherine, which will be collecting money during all masses this weekend. The money will go to Catholic Charities, which is assisting in relief efforts. Call 779-3959 for more information.
• Some schools and individual classes are coming up with ways to channel money to those who need it. At Britton Middle School, some students are collecting donations during their lunch hour to help the residents of affected regions.
• Safeway stores in Morgan Hill are accepting donations at all checkstands and from employees, and proceeds will go to the Red Cross. Safeway Corporation will match the employee donations.
• Nob Hill stores will direct their regular Food for Families donations, which can be made at checkstands, to the Red Cross for a time, instead of local food banks.
• Petco is collecting money to aid pets in the Gulf Coast region.
• The Fabulous Flappers, the award winning senior tap troupe, will appear at the “Rhapsody & Wine…An Afternoon of Musical Memories,” at the Guglielmo Winery on Sept. 11 from 1 to 5pm. The event will benefit the Young at Heart Project and the Red Cross efforts to aid the hurricane victims.
• A direct donation to the Red Cross is possible by calling 1-800-HELP-NOW.
