Morgan Hill – The Year of the Dog will be ushered in today with dinner and traditional Chinese dancing and singing at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center.

The event, hosted by Asians for a Better Community, is the only one of its kind in the South Valley.

“The Asian community is getting bigger and bigger,” said Susan Fan, an ABC board member. “This event is important in that we would like to bring Chinese traditions to the community. We invite the whole community.”

Fan said ABC was founded to keep Chinese traditions alive in the area and help Chinese residents with the larger population. While the group now focuses on events such as its weekly Chinese school, Fan said it will soon expand to broader community involvement, like fundraisers to fight cancer.

“The Chinese community is isolated because of cultural differences and the language barrier,” Fan said. “We want to build a bridge between the American community and Chinese community, help people adjust. You don’t see a lot of Chinese people at the Mushroom Mardi Gras or Taste of Morgan Hill.”
