CALLER 1: I have children in the Orchard Valley Youth Soccer
League and was recently notified to submit a $50 check immediately
to our coach that will be taken by the soccer league and held until
parents do five hours of volunteer work when the league doesn
’t even begin until September. They don’t say what the volunteer
work is, and we’re notified with no time at all to put $50
together. This is in addition to a $25 processing fee above and
beyond the initial fee of $135. The checks are already $175 and
with the extra $50 volunteer fee that make
s it $225. We shouldn’t have to pay this without a clear
explanation.

GREEN PHONE: Thanks for the call. We asked OVYSL President Jack Salvemini and Vice-President Don Mott about the $50 volunteer fee. Both said this is an effort to get more volunteer participation from parents in the OVYSL because the bulk of the work is being done by a handful of people. Mott said the new program is identical to those used by other soccer leagues in District II and Morgan Hill Pony Baseball, and that five hours of volunteer service in a 12-mon th period shouldn’t be too much to ask. He said the process is still under review, with input from OVYSL coaches and the Board of Directors, but possible volunteer requirements could include upkeep of soccer fields and working at various tournaments. Mott said the OVYSL will include additional information in June’s newsletter.
CALLER 2: Hey, I’m calling in regards to your front page sports article in regards to the Gilroy/Live Oak game on Friday afternoon for the TCAL race. You have the wrong name for No. 15, who was kicked off the team a few weeks ago for grades. You’ve got a sophomore named Michael Sorci who made the play, both scoring the winning run on Wednesday and then made the hit that scored the runs on Friday against Live Oak. Hopefully, you can reprint that story. It’s really a shame to have the wrong name attached to that No. 15.
GREEN PHONE: Thanks for the correction, caller. We noted the error in a correction last week. Apparently, when Sorci came up from the JV to replace Ryan Bennett, who is academically ineligible, the LO roster wasn’t changed. While we can’t reprint the story, we can congratulate Sorci for an amazing varsity debut, during which he scored the winning run against Palma, knocked in the winning runs against Gilroy and also scored the winning run at Hollister.
CALLER 3: I just wanted to say thanks for pointing out that Gavilan softball just finished one of its most successful seasons in school history and that coach Tim Kenworthy was named Central Coast South Division Coach of the Year. Too bad he didn’t get rehired for next year. It’s a terrible shame.
GREEN PHONE: No question, it’s an interesting development that gives Kenworthy’s supporters a big argument in their favor. There is a lot of uncertainty with the softball program right now but we will all see how things unfold for it in the coming months. In the meantime, congratulations to Kenworthy and the four Gavilan All–Conference players.
CALLER 4: Hi, I was just calling in on the Glen Webb situation. I’ve had four older sons that played football at Live Oak and Webb was an assistant coach during that time. I’ve always had a tremendous amount of respect for him and thought he did a great job and I was disappointed to see him resign. I hope he makes it back to the head coaching position at some time, but I do understand the current situation and why he may have needed to do that.
GREEN PHONE: Despite making a mistake that cost him his head coaching position, Glen Webb has to be gratified by the community support he has received.
