Twenty-nine girls used complicated computer equations to make bracelets, learn about software programming and explore careers in technology at a workshop at Britton Middle School March 23.

Professional women from IBM served as mentors to show the students that computers can be fun to use. They also encouraged the girls to stay with math and science subjects through school so they can keep their options open for future careers in information technology, science, math and engineering.

“I would like to see more girls develop confidence in science, math and technology so they will continue to take these classes in high school and college,” said Principal Carol Coursey, who asked the women from IBM to come to Britton.

In the first half of the workshop, the women discussed their education and background and answered students’ questions. The second half was spent learning about software programming using the LEGO Mindstorms computer system and creating beaded binary-code bracelets.

Before the workshop began, three girls said they would consider a technical career; after, 21 raised their hands in favor.
